Split

Split is the second biggest city in Croatia. Located on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, it is one of the oldest cities in the area. The locals call it ‘the most beautiful city in the world’ largely thanks to its 2,800 hours of annual sunshine. Tourists flock to this stunning destination, mainly during the summer months, and there is plenty to see and do there.

What to See

Do not miss Diocletian’s Palace, which is a UNESCO Heritage Site. The historic center of the city is built around the remains of this palace and you can either stroll around aboveground or pay to see the excavated remains in the basement.  St Duje’s Cathedral is a stunning blend of Roman temple and Catholic church with a beautiful bell tower. Climb the tower and you will be able to see Marjan hill, nearby islands and of course a panoramic view of Split itself. Marjan is great for hiking, jogging or biking, while the south cliffs are popular with climbers.  One of the oldest parts of Split is Varoš where you can see pretty little houses and charming streets. There are also galleries and museums you can explore. Bačvice beach is perfect for swimming or simply soaking up the sunshine. There are plenty of cafés there so you can cool off with some ice cream.  There are some beaches around Marjan too, and they are usually less crowded during the hottest months. Visit Pazar, the green market, and shop for fruit and vegetables, clothing and enjoy the colorful market scene, or touch the big toe of the Grgur Ninski statue and make a wish. According to local legend, it is sure to come true! Snorkeling, diving, sailing, and swimming are recommended if you are into watersports.

Food and Drink in Split

You must taste ‘soparnik’ if you are in Split. This mangold vegetable-filled dough is baked over the fire before being topped with olive oil and garlic, and you can buy this local delicacy at Pazar (the green maket). You will find a lot of the local food has a strong Italian influence, such as the seafood risotto, locally produced hams and cheeses, and Dalmatian gnocchi.
