Aripo Caves

On the northern side of Trinidad, Aripo Caves are a favourite adventure for visitors who enjoy hiking through thick forest and overgrown trails. The limestone caves are full of stalactites and stalagmites and are home to a large number of bats and rare species of nocturnal birds. Walking a few feet into the cave is fine but if you plan to explore further, you will need special caving equipment. There are no organized tours but you can hire a tour guide through the hotel. The dense areas of the forest are especially beautiful during February when the trees are in full bloom.

Caroni Bird Sanctuary

Are you a nature lover? Then, visiting The Caroni Bird Sanctuary would be a joy for you. Home to a number of birds and mammals, this sanctuary is acres of forest, swamps and ponds. Visitors can enjoy the sights of turtles, fish, birds and different species of snakes including the tree boa. Take a boat tour and snap photos as you spot numerous species of wildlife such as egrets, anteaters, caimans, cardinals and herons. Also, look out for the scarlet Ibis, the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago.

Maracas Bay Beach

Maracas Bay is Trinidad & Tobago’s most famous beach and is popular amongst the locals. An hour from the capital, it is the perfect location to relax and enjoy scenic views. Although there are not many activities, an old fishing village and a protective cove with other amenities such as restrooms, food stands, snack bars and of course on duty lifeguards can be found there. The journey to this beach provides you with many amazing open vistas of the ocean, the mountainside and the panoramic greenery of Trinidad.

Pitch Lake

Located on the west coast of Trinidad, Pitch Lake is one of the largest natural asphalt lakes in the world. The natural springs are supposed to provide healing properties and are also referred to as the “fountain of youth”. People travel to the lake to have natural sulphur baths around the rainy season. Legend says the pitch lake was punishment from the Gods for a tribe of Amerindians who ate hummingbirds which were considered sacred.

Trinidad Carnival

Carnival is the most anticipated event in Trinidad and Tobago. This two-day fiesta is held on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and includes live music, street parties, parades, masquerade bands and impressive costumes. There are also contests for the best bands and designs, j’ouvert fetes and revellers dancing through the streets of Trinidad to popular calypso and soca music. People travel to Trinidad from all across the globe to experience one of the greatest festivals in the world.
