Paraguay

Warm tropical climate, natural beauty and culture await you.

When in Paraguay be sure to visit the country’s capital Asunción where you will encounter the signs which point to the city’s rich history.  See architectural groupings such as Riviera Block which is a preserved city block housing the oldest house in the city as well as the Cathedral, Lopez Palace and the House of Independence.  This city also boasts numerous shopping malls, first class hotels and a vibrant night life.  Be sure also to visit Villarrica the ‘cultured city’ of Paraguay.  Whilst here a trip to the quaint town of Yataity is recommended where delicate handicraft is made of Ao Po'i as well as the finest wines and other produce.  For an encounter with nature visit the city of Encarnacion where you will come across numerous attractions such as flowing streams and lush green countryside that is sure to amaze you.

What to see and do

When in Paraguay the National Pantheon of the Heroes is a must see.   This landmark of great significance to Paraguayan culture was created in honour of the heroes of Paraguay who fought in the past wars.  Monday Falls is another popular attraction providing breath-taking views of a natural phenomenon.   Hear the thundering roar of the numerous falls, an experience like no other.  The nature lover will also be at home at Parque Nu Guasu which is home to numerous lakes and walking trails.  The Museo del Barro is another highly recommended stop, where you will see everything from modern paintings to pre-Columbian and indigenous crafts.

When to visit

With a warm tropical climate, Paraguay is a year round holiday destination.  Travel in the month of February for the annual Dia de San Blas.  This festival which celebrates Paraguay’s patron saint is a major celebration in the city of Ciudad del Este, with week-long open-air events.  Given the country’s religious nature it is not unusual to find festivals which celebrate this and Verbena De San Juan is one such festival.  Held during May this traditional fair in celebration of Saint John sees locals participate in numerous rituals including walking over hot embers; which is truly a spectacle to watch.  The highlight of the Paraguayan calendar and an event you won’t want to miss is Carnival.  Held during February this series of events culminating on ‘Shrove Tuesday’ displays the country’s rich heritage through dance song and other festivities.
