Nicaragua

From towering volcanoes to tranquil lakes, you are sure to enjoy your holiday in Nicaragua.

While it doesn’t get quite the attention that Panama or Costa Rica do, Nicaragua is an up-and-coming travel destination that you don’t want to miss. From towering volcanoes to tranquil lakes and idyllic beachside locations, you won’t regret choosing to travel to Nicaragua on your next vacation.

Airports in Nicaragua include the Sandino International Airport in Managua -- the capital city that serves as the point of departure for all parts north, south and east. Start there and head directly south to Granada, one of the country’s two colonial-era cities, or head north to Leon, the other colonial gem on Nicaragua’s map. Both cities are a historian’s dream, filled with stunning churches, picturesque colonial homes with garden courtyards, and tales of intrigue dating back to the 1500’s.

While Nicaragua doesn’t boast many uber-high-end hotels like some other destinations in Central America, you will have your pick of comfortable colonial hotels with all the amenities, and even low-budget hostels in both Granada and Leon.  While in Granada, be sure to take a day to visit Laguna de Apoyo, the tranquil lake set inside a volcanic crater. At night, peer into the red lava of the Masaya Volcano just north of the city.  If the beach is calling your name, the most popular destination is San Juan del Sur, located on the Pacific coast just north of the Costa Rican border. Surf to your heart’s content, or hire a boat captain to take you deep-sea fishing. Also well worth a visit are the Corn Islands, located off Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast, where snorkeling and scuba diving abound. Flights to Big Corn Island depart from Managua several times daily.

Wherever you go, sample the local seafood, chicken dishes, and abundant fruits that make up the bulk of a typical Nicaraguan’s diet. In the larger cities, you’ll also have your pick among many international restaurants.  Nicaragua is still a hidden treasure that many choose to skip over when they’re planning a Central American vacation -- but you shouldn’t make that mistake.
