Vietnam
For a vacation with memorable sights and even more memorable flavors, you have to travel to Vietnam.
If you haven’t yet given Vietnamese food a try, it should be a big reason to want to visit this southeast Asian nation. But even beyond the delicious, unique flavors that Vietnamese food has to offer, the rice paddies, the jungles and the stunning mountains will give you a trip worth repeating.
What to Eat
First and foremost, what are you going to try first when you travel to Vietnam? You might have already tried Pho -- that beef noodle soup flavored with basil and anise -- but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Also be sure to try the fresh spring rolls, rice, seafood and veggie dishes, and whatever the “house specialty” may be. With a wide array of options on most Vietnamese menus, it’s always good to go with the best. And let’s not forget the French-influenced cuisine of Vietnam, including banh mi -- those delightful baguette sandwiches served with pate, veggies and a dose of spice.
What to Do
In the bustling cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh (Saigon), simply sitting back and people watching is an event all in itself. To see the action even faster, consider renting a motorbike, or booking a motorbike tour to give you freedom to visit the local sights. Not only will it give you a chance to tour around, but dodging traffic will also give you a sense of the local culture.
Also be sure to book a trip up the Mekong Delta, and spend some time bargaining for food and goods at the local markets. Along the coast of Vietnam, experience gorgeous beaches as well as nearby ruins, pagodas and tombs. In the central coast city of Hoi An, you can also take tours of the historic architecture and charming streets.
And in terms of when to go, try to avoid the monsoon season from October to January, as that can be a wet time to visit.
