The airline started in the 1930’s by the merger of approx. 80 small airlines and was very instrumental in early American Aviation history by helping develop some of the workhorse aircraft of that time. American Airlines is today a merged entity as in 2013 the company merged with US Airways Group. The new entity is formally called American Airlines Group, Inc. During 2013 and 2014 there was a major rebranding of the entire fleet and purchase of new aircraft in an effort to improve the level of service, age of the fleet and image of the company. The company will as a result of the merger also operate US Airways hubs located in Washington DC, Philadelphia, Charlotte and Phoenix.
