For an Asian vacation that offers far more than might first be expected, be sure to put Singapore on your list.

It’s a teeming city-state bustling with people -- but when you travel to Singapore, you’ll also experience a lot of natural beauty. Part modern city, part temple paradise, you’re sure to love your trip! At only about 26 miles wide and 14 miles long, Singapore is a small place (just south of Kuala Lumpur), but it can still be action-packed.

What to Do

Singapore features a number of gardens that will take your breath away, including the 70 acres at the Singapore Zoo, featuring a “night safari” featuring nocturnal animals. You can also check out Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, a great place to view the local flora and fauna, or the Singapore Botanic Gardens, featuring more than 1000 kinds of orchid!

For shopping, be sure to visit Orchard Road, a lovely street with many trees, and underground tunnels leading to the stores and shopping centers.

People watching is also a big attraction when you visit Singapore’s Chinatown, a bustling microcosm of life in any other Chinese city. Find temples and shops, and of course, the food. Then switch gears and head to Little India, featuring -- you guessed it -- the Indian side of life in diverse Singapore. At the end of the day, head up near the top of one of Singapore’s many skyscrapers for a cocktail and a fabulous city view.

What to Eat

Just wander the outdoor markets and “hawker” stalls and you’ll be sure to run into a number of local delights. Singapore features some of the best -- and often fanciest -- cuisine the world has to offer, so suffice it to say it’s a foodie’s delight. Famous dishes include the national dish of “chicken rice,” a plain yet flavorful dish that sounds just like its name, as well as wontons, rice noodle stir fry, chili crab, and sambal -- chili paste, shrimp paste and other spices -- coated on everything from seafood to meat to vegetables.
